History of Irving

In 1889, Irving started as a settlement known as “Gorbit”.  The settlement name was changed to “Kit” in 1894. In 1903, a new town named “Irving” was founded by Otis Brown and Julius Otto Schulze. In 1904, the Kit post office was shifted to Irving and in 1914, the town of Irving was officially incorporated. The University of Dallas was founded in Irving in 1956. In 1960s, many manufacturing plants started in Irving, along with financial, transportation and retail businesses. The City Council officially adopted author Washington Irving as Irving’s namesake in 1998. Irving continued to expand throughout the twentieth century. In 2003, Irving celebrated its centennial. The city has grown economically and caters to the recreational and information needs of the visitors as well as residents.
